This is, to our knowledge, the first comprehensive geocoding of China's military history. Source: 中国历代战争年表 (上卷 + 下卷), a PLA-published chronology (解放军出版社, 2003/2010) covering ~3,800 engagements from the legendary era through 1911. The 凡例 excludes engagements without actual combat, making it more selective than 中国战典 (~12,800 entries) or Gu Zuyu's 读史方舆纪要 (~6,200 entries).
Coordinates are matched to CHGIS V6 (Harvard/Fudan, 2016), ~15,700 date-ranged historical administrative units filtered to each battle's dynasty. Because the source describes most battles at prefecture or county level rather than exact battlefield, coordinates represent the administrative center of the named location — setting an inherent precision ceiling of ±10–50 km even for correct entries. Frontier, steppe, and overseas campaigns have wider uncertainty. Dates and coordinates have been iteratively cross-checked against the OCR source across multiple review passes.
| Tier | n | ~correct | Precision |
|---|
High Manually verified against CHGIS or primary source | 490 | ~92% | ±10–30 km |
Standard CHGIS-matched to place named in source; not individually reviewed | 3,171 | ~84% | ±10–50 km |
Low Sparse description; location approximate | 74 | ~68% | ±50–150 km |
| Overall | 3,735 | ~87% | ±10–50 km |
